Vote to Ban Caged Animal Shoots in Pennsylvania This Week
Dear Friend,
We have a big opportunity and we need your help urgently. Legislation to ban the contest shooting of animals trapped or tied in place is being considered as amendments to two other bills and scheduled for a vote by the House of Representatives this week! We've relied on your support this far and your action now will carry this bill across this critical threshold. The opposition is already out in full force, so please take action to show legislators that Pennsylvania residents are tired of this cruelty.
Just as a reminder, this legislation will stop pigeon shoots, events where shooters aim at dazed pigeons launched randomly from boxes with the goal of downing the birds within a ring for prizes. Similar to animal fighting events in nature, contestants gamble on who can shoot the most animals. It will also end barbaric events like the recent turkey shoot where live turkeys had their feet tied to bales of hay and were shot with arrows.
Please contact your state representative to express your strong support for this legislation.
TAKE ACTION
Please make a brief, polite phone call to your state representative to ban caged animal shoots. Click here to look up your representative and the phone number.
When you call, you will likely speak to a staff member who will pass your message along to your legislator. Remember to be polite and professional, and leave your name and address so it is clear that you are a constituent. You can say:
"Hello, my name is [your name] and I live in [your town]. I'm calling to urge [representative's name] to support Amendment 8209 to Senate Bill 151 and Amendment 8210 to House Bill 1543, to ban the shooting of trap-released or tethered animals for target practice. I hope [representative's name] will push for these amendments to receive a vote on the floor. Pennsylvania is the last place where these shoots occur openly and I am proud that the House of Representatives is finally taking this issue seriously. Thank you."
After making your call, please send a follow-up email to your representative to urge support for these amendments. And don't forget to tell your friends and family in Pennsylvania to take action, too.
Thank you for all you do for animals.
Sincerely,
Mike Markarian
