Man Accused of Killing "Baby" the Dog With a Power Drill May Never Go to Trial
Severino Cruz, arrested in January 2008 for killing a 3-year-old pit bull named Baby by drilling a series of holes into her skull with a power drill, is facing deportation to Mexico due to a federal immigration violation. Defense attorneys are reportedly requesting an order of accelerated rehabilitation from the Connecticut Superior Court which would effectively dismiss the animal cruelty case against Cruz.
Take action! Please write letters to:
1. Stephen Preleski, Assistant State’s Attorney
Encourage him to see the Cruz prosecution through the Connecticut state court system with diligence and to resist any federal effort to deport the defendant until Cruz’s state court criminal case is fully resolved (including the defendant having served all incarceration resulting from a state conviction for animal cruelty).
2. S. Bruce Chadbourne, Field Office Director for the U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement Office (ICE) with jurisdiction over Connecticut
Urge ICE to delay their deportation proceedings so that the State of Connecticut can complete its animal cruelty prosecution. To deport the defendant before the state court case is complete means that Mr. Cruz, for all practical purposes, will avoid being held accountable for his conduct in abusing this dog.
