Document of the day: Council could ban pit bulls in Mosinee

MOSINEE -- Pit bulls and any mixed breed dog that contains a portion of pit bull could be banned by the Mosinee City Council tonight.
City staff members have revised the city's animal ordinance to include the prohibition of any pit bull terrier, including American pit bull terrier, Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier or pit bull mix.
In recent months, the city has received complaints about pit bulls being kept at a single family home in the city, said Jeff Gates, city administrator. Complaints included unlicensed dogs, too many dogs on the property, loose dogs, barking dogs and personal safety concerns regarding pit bulls.
Last month, Mosinee police were called to a home on Fifth Street three times for a report of three pit bull-type dogs being kept at the residence, according to a police report. The city ordinances allow no more than two dogs at a home. The resident was warned, according to a police report.
Linda Leitzke lives next to the home with these dogs and said the animals don't make her nervous, but she prefers they be kept on leashes, especially when her grandchildren are around.
A phone number for the home police were called to was disconnected.
The proposed ordinance allows existing pit bulls to remain in the city as long as they are licensed and the owners follow specific conditions that include providing a color photograph of the dog to the city clerk and providing proof of liability insurance of at least $100,000.
There currently are 225 licensed dogs in the city; five are some sort of pit bull breed, Gates said.
Pit bull bans are not new to the area.
Wausau discussed creating a ban in 2000, but the city ultimately defined and banned dangerous animals.
The village of Arpin, near Marshfield, voted in April not to allow any new pit bulls into the community.
In 2003, Neillsville approved a pit bull ban that allowed existing dogs to remain.
