The next meeting is JUNE 9, 2008
The Chagrin Falls' Safety Committee had a meeting earlier this weekt to discuss Chagrin Falls' residents' concerns regarding "dangerous dogs." We were previously told that although pit bulls were the breed to cause the initial concern, the community was not considering breeds-specific ordinances. Unfortunately, it appears that targeting pit bulls is exactly what the resident wants.
At the meeting, the only person to speak on this issue was the resident who initially voiced the concern to council. As stated by the particular resident, he lives next door to a rental property. The renters own two pit bulls. This man's son was playing outside and the pit bull growled at the child. The child was scared and ran to tell his parents. The man indicated that the fence between the homes is not sufficient to hold back the dog and they are scared for their son's safety. They tried to speak with the dogs' owner but he did nothing and they contacted the police. Now, they want pit bull types banned. The man spoke for 20 minutes - the entire time. He had exhibits, including Ohio communities that have banned pits. I believe the family has erected a stronger fence to keep their son safe.
We, of course, can rebut any and all information this man provides to council; however, when residents are this emotional, often council does what's easiest, not what's right. So, we need to prepare for a fight and everyone needs to be prepared to write letters and contact council. Please start preparing your letters to send to each member of council. First, send out an email stating your position and requesting that council do the right thing and prepare breed-neutral language. Please send out an email as soon as you can. Second, once you've finished your letter, please send a copy via US mail to each member of council. Letters signed by the drafter and sent snail mail have more impact than emails since we all know it takes more time to write letters. Please spell check and proof read. I have added a "sample" letter to our webpage. You can actually get to the letter off the "reading, ohio" page.
Please let me know if you are interested in getting involved to oppose this legislation!
SEND EMAILS AND LETTERS.
Subject: Re: Chagrin Fallls Ohio Council members
Hi Lauri,
What was the outcome of the meeting on Monday? Do you have a date for the next meeting and/or any workshop being planned to discuss this?

Chagrin Falls, Ohio, on Monday, May 12, 2008, at 6:30 p.m., will be discussing "dangerous dog" legislation. The Safety Committee will hear from experts, anyone who wants to speak and residents of the Village. I am trying to obtain additional information but have yet to receive a response. At this point, this is all the information I have. WE ASK THAT EVERYONE TRY TO ATTEND!
As soon as I receive additional information, I will let everyone know.
Please contact the Safety Committee Members via email and snail mail to express opposition to breed-specific language. Please understand that snail mail impacts members of council and other officials moreso than does an email. So, please try to, not only send an email, but to put a letter in the mail.
Please remember to be polite and respectful in all correspondence.
