American Pit Bull Terrier Breed Registries

Registration is important for any purebred dog as a means to track the validity of the purebred status. With the American Pit Bull Terrier this is increasingly more important. Many people have the idea in their head of a huge dog with a neck and head that are even bigger than seem possible, when they imagine the APBT. However, that is not the APBT. The purebred APBT is registered by the ADBA and UKC. This is not to say that there aren't any 100 pound mixed pits registered with them. People can and will lie about the lineage of dogs when they mix with mastiffs or other breeds to achieve a certain look. However, these dogs do not place in conformation shows, because thier appearance does not succumb to the standard which has been set fourth by the registry.

That being said, the ABKC is where people with these bully looking "APBT"s show their dogs. They claim they are purebred, but if they were they could place in an ADBA or UKC show, since they can't they go to a different registry for this. Beware of these breeders. Unless what you want is a Mastiff mix, they are not the breeders to get your APBT from.
